It can also be replaced by a halogen.In reaction with acyl chloride or anhydride, diesters are generally formed.Heated in the presence of a catalyst (manganese dioxide, alumina, zinc oxide or sulfuric acid), it is dehydrated within or between molecules to produce circular glycol acetal, which reacts with nitric acid to produce glycol dinitrate (an explosive).Ethylene glycol is a raw material for the production of polyester resins, alkyd resins, and polyester fibers.
