Does it really do this? Flexible tape – CBS Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh (KDKA)-The manufacturer of Flex Seal has introduced a new product called Flex Tape.

It claims to be able to repair, glue, seal and repair immediately-any leaks can be repaired anywhere.

But did it really do it?

The announcer Phil Swift was very convincing in the TV commercial for Flex Tape. According to Swift, it is "a super waterproof tape that can be patched, glued, sealed and repaired immediately."

Advertising makes it look easy. You find a leak and Flex Tape can fix it.

Jan Matuscak is a tablescape artist who created core decorations for large-scale events. She hopes that the tape can help her complete some do-it-yourself projects.

"Well, I hope this will work. So, I will keep a positive attitude," she said.

The instructions on the packaging are simple. It only needs to be cut, peeled, pasted or sealed.

Jane thought about taking the exam, maybe she won.

"It feels like it will work. It feels heavy. It's rubbery and sticky," she said.

The Flex Tape commercial described the product as: "Three times the thick adhesive, which almost welds itself to the surface, immediately preventing the most serious leaks."

To try to see how sticky it is, Jan and Lynne Hayes-Freeland of KDKA-TV dug a hole in a bucket and then filled it with water until it squirted out.

"Okay, the water came out of the hole, let's see if this works," Jan said.

Initially, the tape did seem to prevent the leak.

However, things turned around a few minutes later.

"It leaks from the top, there is a bump where the hole is, it actually leaks from the bottom. When I put it on for the first time, it looks like it will work, but no, no," Jan said.

It is said that you can also repair leaks from within.

Therefore, using the same style of bucket with similarly placed holes, they tried again, believing that the water pressure might be different this time.

Initially, it seemed to work well to stick the tape on the inside of the barrel. However, it is certain that they added a little more water.

"It's leaking from the top and bottom. It's leaking," Jan said.

To be fair, when they took a closer look at the patch, they agreed that it could be a bit straighter and wondered if it made any difference.

Therefore, they tried to repair a hole from underwater for the second time.

At this point, they were not sure if it was more difficult, or if they just found it difficult, so they tried a third time.

"It's hard to see underwater, and it's hard to determine where your hole is," Jan said.

They tried a total of 3 times, but the results did not improve.

"It leaks from the top, it leaks from the bottom. It's just leaking," Jan said. "Like a waterfall."

The ad showed Flex Tape on PVC pipes, but Jan and Lynne chose to try to repair garden hoses.

When they turned on the water pressure, they found a clear hole.

This time, they plan to wrap Flex Tape in the leak—not just patch it.

Jane wanted to make sure the tape was opened safely.

"Let's see, we're going to wrap it up and wrap it two more turns. It's safe, put some pressure on it. Let's see what happens," she said.

After a few minutes, the result came like a tide.

"It's dripping behind," she said.

They conducted most of the tests based on the content shown in the ad. However, they leak every time.

Did they miss something in the description?

Just below the instructions on the package, it did say: "For emergency repairs." This was slightly different from their expectations. Jan thinks this does not meet her needs in the long run.

"It sounds almost like you use it very quickly once, and then that's it," she said.

They also tried to repair a hole in a children's swimming pool, but it also leaked.

The advertisement even showed a ship repaired with Flex Tape going to sea again.

Jane and Lynn did not go that far. However, based on what she saw in the test, would Jane be willing to take the repaired boat?

"I won't take that boat. You can't catch me on the boat," she said.

The instructions also say that sometimes it takes 24 hours for Flex Tape to be fixed. However, a day later, Jan took pictures of these buckets.

The original water has leaked out, and when it is filled again, it continues to leak.

So, did it really do it? For Jan, this is a simple answer.

"I was disappointed because it didn't hold up. It didn't advertise as it was," she said.
