The strong northwest winds hitting the coast of Newquay in Cornwall may be good news for local surfers hoping to catch the huge waves. But for the young athletes participating in the English School Cross Country Cup at Tretherras School in the town, this just means another challenge on the course that has been very undulating due to the recent wet weather and the feet are very greasy.

The 40th edition of the event was the third time to visit Newquay in 12 years. Participants were not as lucky as the last time. In 2014, when the weather was unusually warm, school teachers and spectators wore T-shirts and shorts. This time, the air was really cold, swamps and strong winds. Many people will agree to perfect off-road conditions.

The overnight wind caused severe damage to the stadium's infrastructure, and the organizers woke up on the day of the game (December 4) to find that the markers and tape were blown down. Due to Covid, some teams are also unable to make the trip. Others have taken a long journey from places like Cumbria and northeast England-after the pandemic caused the cancellation of events last winter, they are eager to make a journey.

The tournament is the sister of the British School Championships-held at Hop Farm in Kent this winter-and it focuses on school team elements.

The first game of the day-the international women's competition-was won by Guildford High School, but the personal victory was won by Zoe Gilbodie of Thomas Strford School. Gilberdi won the English school championship by defeating Jas Bailey in Liverpool a few days before the first national blockade in March 2020, where she was 8 seconds ahead of Messi Bellwood and Katie Pye, and then exhausted. Fell on his knees. "The wind really took it away from me," she said.

Rebecca Flaherty led Bradford Grammar School to a gold medal in the high school women’s competition, as her teammates Amelie Lane (5th), Emily Gibbins (6th) and Carla Barennes (28th) followed closely and continued the school’s endurance. The fine tradition of sports. Impressively, the former Bradford students include triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee.

"In the beginning I did a lot of sports," Frahati said. "Then my brother started running harder in the seventh year. I just imitated him. This year I participated in the fall running competition of the English school, but my downhill running was not fully qualified. I really like it here because It has a good mixed ground. It is a hill, but it is not a "rolling hill." If there is no hill, the game will be very crowded."

Like many athletes in Newquay, this is also Flahati's first trip to Cornwall. "We will drive straight home now, and we will be back at about 1:00 in the morning. I will sleep well in the future!"

International boys champion Henry Sheffield was eager to go home because he played another cross-country race in Gloucestershire the next day. When Dr. Charona won the team award, he won the gold medal for the Stroud Marin School.

"I'm so tired that I can hardly speak," Sheffield said when he was hit by a brief and unwelcome hail in the middle of the game. "It was such a tough game. I took the lead when going downhill, it felt natural and tried to push it from there."

He added: "This is a great course-one of my favorite courses. It is only 5 kilometers, but it feels like 10 kilometers. When the hail hits my face, I want to stop. But I keep going. I am very happy to win this victory."

Since the start of this event in 1981, the British Schools Cross Country Cup has held a senior competition for the first time. Sam Hodgson won the title of Boy Reading Blue School before Rowinmere-Ingram, led by Matthew Dubury, ranked third. The Judd School Kent team won.

In a highly competitive race, there were still four players competing in the final lap, but Hodgson made a decisive breakthrough when he was half a mile away from the race. "I really didn't expect to be there, so when I got to the last lap, I thought,'Hey, I might win this game'," he said.

"I did some tests on the last lap and I felt that their legs were not as strong as mine. When we entered the steeper section, I thought,'Let's keep working hard'. I think this is how I win. Because I didn't sprint."

Tilly Robertson won the junior high school women's championship at Guildford High School, and Sevenoaks won the team honor. Entering the final stage, she still had a lot of work to do, but completed the game with a few seconds advantage. "This is my biggest victory so far," she said.

Jake Meyburgh also smiled after winning the junior gold medal for St George's College Weybridge, and The Coopers Company & Coborn from Upminster won the team championship. "It's windy and mountainous, so I know I have to work hard against the wind," Mayberg said.

Unlike many athletes, he does not have to jump on the minibus and start a long drive home. "We will live here tomorrow and go for a walk on the beach!" he said.
