A hole that was dug by Johannesburg Water to repair a burst pipe in Lone Rock Estate in Douglasdale is causing concern for residents.

The pipe burst occurred in March and was repaired by Johannesburg Water but the utility did not fill in the hole. Costa Sardianos, a resident of the estate said, “There’s a big gaping hole here and we cannot move all this debris here. There are children playing here all the time, and a number of the houses have young children… the story of the young child that had fallen into the pipe, it’s a massive concern.

“We are really at wit’s end with this situation as this has been going on since March and we need to draw a line in the sand. What happens when the rains come down, which ends up cleaning up the roads and blocking the drains further down the road.”

The pavement where the hole is situated has been cordoned off with tape but there is still debris encroaching onto the road that needs to be removed. Sardianos said motorists might damage their cars at night if they didn’t see the debris. JRA communications spokesperson Mosa Makhalima said the query had been addressed to the depot with more information to follow.
